DOST Secretary Visited Baguio Smart City Command Center

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr. visited the Baguio Smart City Command Center yesterday. Mayor Benjie and Engr. Felipe Puzon, Jr. gave the secretary a tour within the facility.

Secretary Solidum was introduced to the Digital Twin City app, a project spearheaded and developed by Baguio City Planning and Development Office. The Digital Twin City is an application that presents a selected area within Baguio Ciy in 3D. The app also contains data about the topography as well as structures of a particular area.

The DOST secretary was impressed as he was also informed about other practical applications (use cases) of the smart city system. He also offered existing applications used by the DOST that can also be integrated into the smart city platform.

An app called HazardHunterPH has a wide collection hazard maps from PHIVOLCS, MGB, and PAGASA, which can be overlaid on a digital map.

GeoMapperPH is an application that serves as a platform for national government agencies, LGUs, and NGOs to access, utilize, and contribute data into an integrated database. Developed by GeoRisk Philippines, this app is designed to ease data collection and updating of hazards, vulnerabilities, and coping capacity to support decision-making process in times of disasters or calamities.

PlanSmart Ready to Rebuild app is an automated planning tool that helps boost disaster rehabilitation and recovery efforts of a locality. The app aids LGUs to create seamless disaster recovery plans and intervention measures.

The secretary was also informed about the Baguio in My Pocket app. The app offers a plethora of services including tax assessment, building permit application, business permit application/renewal, and emergency 911 services. Engr. Puzon provided a live demonstration of the app’s 911 feature.

Being a geologist and former PHIVOLCS head, Secretary Solidum was impressed seeing what Baguio City has achieved with its smart city endeavor. He then offered, “So kung ano man ‘yung puwede pa naming maidagdag sa inyo [smart city system], sabihin niyo lang.”

Mayor Benjie expressed his gratitude. He replied, “Sa tingin ho namin marami pa ang maaari ninyong maidagdag para sa aming Baguio Smart City System.”

The Baguio Smart City System is capable of carrying multiple use cases that enhances the city’s resource management, governance efficiency, and public service delivery.
